Selection and storage
Berries are carefully selected for quality, handpicked and packed and sent to controlled cool rooms on the same day. They are inspected for quality control and then refrigerated to optimum storage temperature.
At every step of the selection and storage process, dedicated Costa professionals ensure quality control and take care that only berries of the highest standards reach our customers.
CostaExchange is a pioneer in the use of modified atmosphere (also known as controlled atmosphere) methods to store berries. The berries are stored just below zero temperature, where they are effectively ‘put to sleep’. This method was originally developed as a way of storing apples and pears to prolong shelf life. CostaExchange was the first Australian company to employ this method for berry storage.
Storing berries in modified atmosphere is a unique practice particularly valuable for export opportunities. Because berries stay in premium condition for longer they can withstand travel via sea freight.
CostaExchange’s berry category is also a leading force in frozen berries, supplying these to supermarkets and food producers throughout Australia, making them part of baked products, desserts and other consumables that Australians can eat every day of the year.
