The TomatoExchange glasshouses use the latest technology to harness sunlight, moderate temperatures and control the amount of water the tomatoes receive. The result is a very environmentally aware method of production.
The tomatoes are grown in naturally occurring peat moss, a by-product of the coconut plant with an excellent capacity to hold nutrients and retain oxygen. After the peat moss has been used, it is sent to local nurseries to for re-use as a soil improver.
The plants are grown for 48 weeks, with a summer and winter crop planted each year.
TomatoExchange has significantly reduced chemical use in two ways:
• By introducing carefully selected predator insects to combat tomato pests
• By the simple fact of growing tomatoes in a glasshouse, where there is less exposure to pests.
Research and development
TomatoExchange maintains a strong focus on sustainable farming practices by using the latest technologies.
The ongoing R&D efforts seek to ensure that operations are as environmentally responsible as possible, and that the environmental impact is minimised.
